What It Helps You Do

Built for the Moments Students Actually Face

  • Start an assignment when you feel stuck.
  • Study in ways that make learning stick.
  • Use AI for support without giving away the thinking.
  • Turn feedback into a clear next move.
  • Recover when your plan falls apart, your motivation drops, or your term goes off track.

Think First does not give you a separate trick for every problem. It gives you one system that works across all of them.

The System

One System, Seven Moves

The Learning Ownership System gives you seven moves for approaching any academic task. Each move is guided by one question:

  1. Understand
What am I being asked to learn or do?
  2. Plan
    What strategy will I use?
  3. Practice First
What will I do myself first?
  4. Monitor
How will I know whether my approach is working?
  5. Adjust
    What needs to change?
  6. Verify
What do I need to check, revise, reject, or disclose?
  7. Transfer
What will I keep or change next time?

Every tool in the book puts one or more of these moves into a usable form. Completing a page is never the goal; making a better learning decision is. Because the same seven moves recur across assignments, exams, AI use, feedback, weekly planning, and recovery, you are not learning a separate technique for every problem. You are practising one system across many situations.

Think First is not a collection of worksheets. It is a learning system you write in.

Find Your Problem

Think First is designed to be opened at the point of need rather than read cover to cover. It begins with an index that starts from what is weighing on you right now and sends you straight to the tool that fits. Here is part of that index, with the page each situation points to.

Why It Matters Now

Polished Work, Weak Understanding

AI has made it possible to hold both at once: an assignment that reads well and an understanding that will not survive the exam. Familiar study advice (try harder, manage your time, do not procrastinate) is not enough on its own, and it says little about the AI tools now one tap away whenever you sit down to work.

What helps is a system: knowing what a task is really asking, choosing a strategy on purpose, checking understanding with evidence instead of confidence, and using AI in ways that leave you more capable, not less.

Grounded in Learning Science

Created by a Professor Who Studies How Students Learn

Peter Arthur is a Professor of Teaching at the University of British Columbia and a recipient of the Killam Teaching Prize. His work focuses on self-regulated learning, metacognition, and how students can use AI in ways that support rather than replace learning. He created the Learning Ownership System to help students plan, monitor, adjust, and take greater ownership of their learning.

Questions

Questions About Think First

Will this give me even more work to do?
No. You do not need to read the book from beginning to end or complete every tool. The Find Your Problem index takes you directly to the support you need, and Quick, Core, and Deep options let you choose the level that fits your situation.

Is this only for students who are struggling?
No. The system can help you recover when you are behind, but it can also help you plan stronger work, study more efficiently, use feedback better, and make more deliberate decisions before problems develop.

Is this an anti-AI book?
No. It is a learning-ownership book. The goal is not simply to use AI less; it is to decide whether and how AI would help you become more capable next time. The book is equally clear about what to do when a course or task allows no AI at all.

Do I have to work through it in order?
No. The book is designed to be used at the point of need. The Find Your Problem index matches your situation to the right tool.

How is it different from the journals?
The journals are dated, term-long daily practices. Think First teaches the underlying system in a compact guide you can write in. Use it in any term, at any point, alongside a journal or on its own.

Can instructors use it in courses?
Yes. The six free companion tools at LearningOwnership.com/ThinkFirst may be copied and shared unchanged, without charge, and with attribution. Contact Scholarly Learning regarding other classroom copying, course packs, or institutional reproduction, and for bulk or course-adoption inquiries.
