Six One-Page Tools
Six tools from Think First, each on a single page, each applying one or more moves of the Learning Ownership System to a specific student situation. They work on their own, and they work for any student in any course. Print them, distribute them in a course or workshop, or post the unchanged files in a course space.
1. The Seven Moves
The whole system on one page, with the core question for each move. The reference sheet for everything else.
2. Quick Assignment Triage
Five questions that sort the task, anticipate where you will get stuck, and name a first action before you open a blank document.
3. Pause Before You Prompt
Name the real barrier first. A knowledge gap, an unclear task, tiredness, and avoidance each call for a different response, and only some involve AI.
4. Turning Feedback into a Next Step
Turn vague or frustrating comments into one question you can ask and one change you can carry into the next piece of work.
5. Stop Rereading Everything
Move from familiarity to retrieval. Test yourself, find what you cannot yet recall, and space the practice across the days you have.
6. Reset and Recovery
Restart the next step, not the whole term. A staged way back in, including a practical 48-hour plan.
Get All Six Tools How the Method Works
The tools are hosted on LearningOwnership.com, the home of the Learning Ownership System, alongside the research behind it. Each link above opens that tool directly.
Planning Resources for Independent Research
Three longer downloads for graduate students working on theses, dissertations, comprehensive exams, and major research projects. These were built for the summer edition of The Graduate, and the planning and reflection structures in them apply to any stretch of independent academic work.
The Summer Planning Toolkit
A goal-setting worksheet, a weekly planning template, research-informed strategies, and a recovery plan for when a stretch of open time derails.
Daily Reflection Starter
A standalone morning and evening reflection template. Print it and try the daily rhythm for a week before committing to a full journal.
The Four-Phase Term Structure: One-Page Summary
A visual overview of how the journals are organized across a term, from Envision through Design and Practice to Integrate. Useful for sharing with peers, advisors, or faculty.
Where They Come From
Think First teaches the complete Learning Ownership System: all seven moves and the tools that put them to work on assignments, exams, AI use, feedback, weekly planning, and recovery. The journals carry the system through a full term, day by day, for undergraduate and graduate students.
You do not need any of them to use the free tools above.
