The Learning Ownership System is a practical translation of research on self-regulated learning, metacognition, retrieval practice, feedback, and responsible AI use into routines students can run on a Tuesday afternoon with an assignment due Friday.
It is seven moves. That is the whole system. It applies to a single assignment, a reading, an exam-preparation session, a set of feedback, or a conversation with AI. Think First teaches it directly, and the Scholarly Learning journals carry it through a full term.

The Seven Moves
These are the moves effective learners tend to make on a single piece of academic work. They are moves rather than steps, because real work does not run in a straight line. Students loop, skip ahead, and come back.

- 1. UnderstandWork out what the task is actually asking, and what a good answer would have to do, before starting to produce anything.
- 2. PlanDecide on an approach and a concrete first step, rather than starting at the top and hoping.
- 3. Practice FirstTry to retrieve or attempt before reviewing, so that studying reveals what you do not yet know instead of confirming what you already do.
- 4. MonitorNotice, while the work is in progress, whether the approach is working, rather than finding out at the end.
- 5. AdjustChange the approach on evidence, not on frustration, and keep what is working.
- 6. VerifyCheck the work against the actual requirements, including anything AI helped produce, before it is submitted.
- 7. TransferName what worked and carry it deliberately into the next task, course, or term.
The Four-Phase Term Structure
A term has its own shape. It starts open, fills up, gets difficult in the middle, and ends. The Scholarly Learning journals are built in four phases to match that arc. This is not a second system, it is how a term-length journal is organized so that the seven moves have somewhere to live day to day.

- 4. IntegrateClose the term deliberately: what it taught you, what carries forward, and the evidence that real progress happened.
The Moves Run Inside the Phases
The phases decide when a student works on what. The moves decide how the work gets done once they sit down. A student who has read Think First brings all seven to every day of a journal. A student using only a journal meets many of them through its planning, reflection, and adjustment routines, without their always being named.

Which Title Teaches What
The line is deliberately small. One book teaches the system. The journals help students live it across a term. They do not all lean on the same moves equally, and that is deliberate. Undergraduate work is dense with tasks other people set, so it exercises the full set. Graduate research is long and self-directed, with no prompt to decode and nothing to retrieve for, so it leans on the moves that carry sustained effort.

What the System Is Built On
The Learning Ownership System is not itself a research finding. It is a practical synthesis: an attempt to take a set of well-supported ideas about how people learn and turn them into routines a busy student will actually use.
Research on self-regulated learning describes learning as a cycle of planning, monitoring, and reflecting rather than a single burst of effort. Research on retrieval practice suggests that attempting to recall material is generally more effective for durable learning than rereading it. Research on implementation intentions suggests that specific plans tied to a time and place support follow-through better than general intentions. Research on feedback suggests it helps most when students do something with it rather than simply receive it.
The emerging research on AI and learning is more mixed and more recent, and the system treats it that way: not as a verdict, but as a reason for students to keep their own thinking visible.
